“BBNaija Never Set Out To Be A Talent Show” – John Ugbe
- It’ll be fascinating to see who will be the next superstar to come out of the house and the impact he or she would go on to have on young Nigerians.
The new season of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) show will kick off on Sunday, June 30, and fans of the thrilling reality show are already rubbing their palms in excitement over what interesting dynamics a new set of housemates would bring to their TV screens.
The show, which is being produced in Nigeria this year, will see 20 young contestants from diverse backgrounds and orientation strive to warm their way into Nigerians’ hearts in order to win the ultimate prize.
There have been questions around the credibility of BBNaija’s selection process and expectations from participants but these were convincingly addressed by show host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and MultiChoice Nigeria CEO John Ugbe at the last Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) in April.
According to Mr. Ugbe, organisers of the show did not particularly set out to craft BBNaija as a talent show but have been lucky to have had some of the most creative talents as participants since it first aired few years ago.
“We never think of BBNaija as a talent show,” Mr. Ugbe said at the time. “60% of people believe it’s a talent show. It’s really just about being yourself. It’s a coincidence that we end up with a lot of talented people.”
Tobi Bakre, a participant at the last edition of the show, and Ebuka also explained that the selection process is as transparent as water, while assuring that the participants are not selected based on whether they know anyone among the decision makers.
“It’s the most credible I’ve ever been a part of,” Ebuka assured.
The 20 participants of BBNaija’s new edition will be revealed on the day it kicks off and it’ll be intriguing to see how quickly the audience warm up to them. What will also be fascinating, is to see who will be the next superstar to come out of the house and the impact he or she would go on to have on young Nigerians.
